Modal verbs / Modal Helping verbs

 

We are learning under the heading of verbs, based on which we have already learned about helping verb. On that basis the second thing we learn is about Modal verbs / Modal Helping verbs.

Definition Of Modal Verbs

They are auxiliary verbs that provide additional and specific meaning to the main verb of the sentence.Modal verbs are sometimes called that Modal helping verb or Modal Auxiliary verb.

Some examples Using Modal

01. Can
To talk about ability ,suggestions and requests.(informal way)

I can swim in the sea.
Can you call me?

02. Be able to ( Be = am , is , are , was , were , will be)
To talk about ability

I am able to drive a car.
He is able to study English.
She is able to cook Chicken curry.
We are able to run fast.
They are able to play cricket.

I was able to draw beautiful drawing.
He was able to make a cake.
She was able to earn money.
It was able to fly high.
we were able to find him.
they were able cut the tree.

I will be able to run fast.
He will be able to study hard.
They will be able to find him.

03. Can not / Can’t
To talk about something is impossible.

I cannot swim in the sea.
You cannot try this.
We cannot jump there.
They cannot cut the huge tree.

04. Could
To talk about ability ( Past ability) , request and suggestion. ( formal way)

I could play cricket when I was fifteen years old.
He could speak English when he was in England.
They could cut the tree When their bodies were healthy.

Could you come in ?
Could you take me to the hospital?
Could you give me a pen?

You could go there.
He could go to the library.
she could write a poem.

05. May
To talk about possibility , formal request and permission.

It may rain today.
He may be a policeman.
She may be a thief
They may be doctors.

May I come in?
May I go out?
May you take this?
May she write a poem?

06. Might ( Past )
To talk about possibility was in the past.

He might go there in time.
She might swim when she was ten years old.
It might fly high when it was young.

07. Must
To talk about obligations or something is true.

You must wear white clothes while coming to school.
He must reach his office before eight thirty.
The government must eradicate drug abuse.
The police must catch the thieves.
A driver must wear a seat belt while traveling in a vehicle.
If the red light is on while driving, you must stop the vehicle.
Look at the snow , it must be cold outside.

08. Have to
To talk about obligations.

You must wear white clothes while coming to school.
He must reach his office before eight thirty.

09. Need to
To talk about obligations.

10. Need not (needn’t)
To talk about absence of obligations.( Not necessary)

To talk about prohibition.

You mustn’t drive without a driving license.
You must not stop when the light is green.
You mustn’t hunt endangered species.
You mustn’t drive without wearing a seat belt.
Corona patients mustn’t socialize with others.

12. Don’t have to

To talk about absence of obligations.( Not necessary)

you needn’t have a degree for this job.
She needn’t go to her office on time today.

13. Should
To talk about an opinion or advice.

If you have a fever you should see a doctor.
If you study hard you can pass the exam.
You should apply for this job.
You should brush your teeth three times a day.
Corona patients should wear masks.

14. Should not ( Shouldn’t)
To talk about an opinion or advice.

You should not drink cold water when you are cold.
You should not socialize with others when you have an infection.
You should not get wet in the rain when you have a fever.
You should not eat sweets when you have a toothache.
He should not drink soft drinks in the morning on an empty stomach.

15. Ought to
To talk about an opinion or advice.

If you have a fever you should see a doctor.
If you study hard you can pass the exam.
You should apply for this job.
You should brush your teeth three times a day.
Corona patients should wear masks.

Question Sentence with Modal Verb.

Here, to convert a sentence into a question sentence, the modal helping verb must be written before the subject because the modal helping verb is used instead of the auxiliary verb.

EX:- You can go there.
Can you go there?

EX:- He must do it.
Must he do it?

EX:- You could please go inside.
Could you please go inside?

EX:- You should brush your teeth.
Should you brush your teeth?

EX:- It may rain today.
May it rain today?

EX:- He may be a policeman.
May he be a policeman?

EX:- She may be a thief.
May she be a thief?

EX:- They may be doctors.
May they be doctors?

Similarly, when a main verb is used next to a modal helping verb, the base verb must be used.
