In this section we mainly learn about gender and its types.

01. Numbers ( Singular Noun and Plural Nouns) – Numbers (Singular And Plural) and Genders

Singular Nouns:-

Dog
Cat

Above I have given some singular nouns and its plural nouns. But you may be confused as how I have converted singular nouns into plural nouns i.e. I have added “S” to some words , I have added “IES” to some words , I have added “ES” to some words and “VES” to some words. You may not be clear on what basis this has been added.I am giving you some conditions that how to change these.

Condition :- 01

When a word ends in the following letter / letters, “ES” is added at the end of the word.

“S” , “SH” , “CH” , “X” , “O”

Singular Noun             Plural Noun

Bus                                 Buses
Brush                             Brushes
Watch                            Watches
Fox                                  Foxes
Mango                            Mangoes

Condition :- 02

In condition two, let’s see how to make plural nouns ending in “Y”. When a word ends with the letter ” Y” we must also observe the letter preceding the letter “Y”.

Singular Noun             Plural Noun

Boy                                 Boys
Toy                                 Toys
Key                                 Keys
Monkey                         Monkeys
Lady                               Ladies
Puppy                            Puppies
Baby                               Babies
Army                              Armies
City                                 Cities

Here, we have to add ” S” when there is a vowel before the letter “Y”.
Here, when there are consonants before the letter ” Y” we should remove “Y” and add “IES” with that word.

Condition :- 03
If a noun ends in “F” and “FE” we must add “VES” with it. So, when we add “VES” we should remove “F” and “FE” in that word.

Singular Noun     Plural Noun

Leaf                         Leaves
Thief                       Thieves
Wolf                        Wolves
calf                          Calves
Knife                       Knives

Condition :- 04
If a noun ends in any other letters apart from the above three conditions, we should only add “S” to the word.

Singular Noun    Plural Noun

Dog                        Dogs
Cat                         Cats
House                    Houses
Car                         Cars
Van                         Vans
Chair                      Chairs

Condition :- 05 – Exceptional Plural / Irregular Plural

Exceptional Plural means that we do not use all the above four conditions to make the words plural.

Based on English grammar, plurals are also given for some words. we should not use the above conditions with those words. we should remember those words.

Singular Noun   Plural Noun

Child                    Children
Man                      Men
Tooth                   Teeth
Foot                      Feet

Louse                    Lice
Deer                      Deer
Sheep                    Sheep
Fish                       Fish
Series                    Series
Person                  People
Woman                Women
Aircraft                Aircraft
Crisis                    Crises
Curriculum         Curricula
Datum                  Data
Focus                    Foci
Vita                       Vitae
Tuna                     Tuna
Larva                    Larvae
