Before learn uses of nouns in English -01 ,we are conducting this as a series of classes. Based on which we have already covered part one and part two.

In part one, we discussed the importance of the English language and why we should learn the English language.

Now we will learn about nouns. We are going to learn four types of things under this topic of Nouns.

In this third part we are going to look at only two of the above four categories.

01. Definition of nouns – Uses of nouns in English -01

A noun is a word that denotes person , place , things , animal and quality.

Let us see these with examples.

Person:- Kalyani , Ahamed, Teacher , Doctors
Place:- London , Sri Lanka , Home , School
Things:- Table , Book , Pencil , Car
Animal:- Lion , Goat , Cow , Crow
Quality:- Honour , Justice , Courage

02. Types of nouns and their definition – Uses of nouns in English -01

In general we can classify nouns as follows. It is not necessary to classify them in this way. Everyone will categorize as per their needs and I am using it in a simple way to explain to you here.

01. Concrete noun

* Common noun
* Proper noun

02. Collective noun

03. Abstract noun

04. Compound noun

05. Countable noun

06. Uncountable noun

 

01.Concrete Nouns in English

Concrete noun is word that denotes names any group of people , places and things. It can be observed one of five senses.

A concrete noun we can see , hear , touch , smell and taste.

Taste :- Steak
Smell :- Flower
Hear :- Song
See :- Lion
Touch :- Skin

Above we have learned the definition of concrete noun, its properties and its examples.

Now let’s take a closer look at the two types of concrete nouns.

* Common Nouns in English

A common noun is the common name given to every person , place and thing of the same kind.

Person:- Boy , Girl , Teacher , Man , Woman , Father , Mother , Doctor , Driver

Place:- School , Station , Village , City , Town , Church , Hospital , Garden , Mountain , Country , Ocean , Continent

Thing:- Pencil , Books , Table , Car , Van , Phone , Cup , Tree , Lion , Papaya , Ostrich

* Proper Nouns in English

A proper noun is word that denotes the particular person , place and thing. A proper noun whether it is placed at the beginning, middle or end of a sentence, its first letter must begin with an English capital letter.

Let us compare common noun and proper noun with examples to learn proper noun clearly.

A proper noun is used to refer to a common noun as in the above examples. Here, the first letter of a proper noun must always begin with an English capital letter.

Let’s see some more examples of this.In these examples, common nouns are used in the first sentence and proper nouns are used in the second sentence.They are indicated by bold letters.

01. Who is a beautiful girl?
Rubaina is a beautiful girl.

02. In which school did you study?
I was educated at Oxford School.

03. Who are their closest friends?
Their closest friends are Rahul and Meena.

04. When is your birth month?
My birth month is June.

05. What is the name of her country?
Her country name is England.

06. Jaipur is called as which city?
Jaipur is known as Pink City.

07. What is the name of the building you visited yesterday?
The name of the building we visited today is Taj Mahal.

08. In which sea have you swum?
I swam in the Red Sea.

09. Which park did you go to play volleyball?
I went to Rose Park to play volleyball.

10. Which language does he teach in this school?

He teaches Arabic in this school.

So, now we hope, you have complete knowledge about Common nouns and proper nouns.

02. Collective Nouns in English

A collective noun is a word that is a group of people , animals and things.

Team , Squad , Army , Jury , Clergy , Crew , Herd , Litter , Pride , School , Bunch , Troupe , Tribe , Pride , Gaggle , Pack , Collection , Battery

That is, the collective self is all that belongs to the same group.

That is, when we have a banana, we call it a banana. At the same time, when we have a lot of bananas, we call it a comb of banana.

Now, let’s look at some examples of collective nouns.

01. A crew of astronauts.
02. A troupe of actors.
03. A tribe of locals.
04. A pride of lions.
05. A gaggle of geese.
06. A litter of Kittens.
07. A pack of cards.
08. A collection of stamps.
09. A battery of guns.
10. A bunch of flowers.

As per the above examples, when we say a word in collective noun it must be plural. In the above examples we have outlined for you the collective nouns and plural nouns.
