Verbs and their types in English

 

We have been looking at some things serially in the series called English Grammar in an easy way and we have already made some posts based on that.In today’s post we will learn about verbs and their types in English.On that basis now we will learn about the types of verbs.

In this way, in this series we are going to learn the things given below.

01.Types Of Verbs in English

* Modal Verbs / Modal Helping Verbs / Modal Auxiliary verbs

* Main Verbs

Now, we will learn about helping verbs or auxiliary verbs.

01. Helping Verbs / Auxiliary Verbs – Verbs and their types in English

Helping Verbs / Main Verbs help the main verb to describe action. That action happened in the past or is happening in the present or will happen in the future.

Such auxiliary verbs are derived from the main verb.

Here, I am going to divide the auxiliary verbs into three parts based on the main verbs and form the respective auxiliary verbs from those main verbs.

01. Verb “Be”

Here “Be” is a main verb and from this we will form auxiliary verbs.

am , is , are
was , were
will be

All the above six helping verbs are derived from the main verb “Be”

These six verbs can be classified based on the three tenses as follows,

Present Tense Past Tense Future Tense

Am , Is , Are Was , Were Will be

Here, the helping verbs “am” , “is” “are” are used for the present tense, “was” , “were” for the past tense and “will be” for the future tense.

Below , we give which subject you should use for which helping verb / Auxiliary Verb while forming a sentences in each tense. Let us see this with examples.

Examples are in the positive sentence – Verbs and their types in English

In present tense,

I – am

He , She , It , Singular Subject – Is

We , You , They , Plural Subject – Are

I am a teacher.

He is a student.
She is a lawyer.
It is a bird.
The teacher is in the classroom.

We are doctors.
They are Farmers.
You are thieves.
Teachers are in the hospital.

In past tense,

I , He , She , It , Singular Subject – Was

We , You , They , Plural Subject – Were

I was in London.
He was a policeman.
She was my friend.
It was there.
Teacher was in her office.

We were at home.
You were my class teacher.
They were at the beach.
Teachers were at their home.

In Future Tense,

I , We , You , They , He , She , It. Singular Subject , Plural Subject – Will Be

I will be in Australia.
We will be there.
You will be as a my friend.
They will be in prison.
He will be her husband.
She will be with another sister.
It will be on a tree.
Teacher will be in her classroom.
Teachers will be at the meeting.

We have seen some examples using helping verbs in all three tenses.Thus all the examples we have seen are positive sentences.

Now let’s see how we can turn the above examples into interrogative sentences using helping verbs.

To convert a sentence into an interrogative sentence, we must write the helping verb before the subject.

I am a teacher.
Am I a teacher?

He is a student.
Is he a student?

She is a lawyer.
Is she a lawyer?

It is a bird.
Is it a bird?

The teacher is in the classroom.
Is the teacher in the classroom?

We are doctors.
Are we doctors?

They are Farmers.
Are they farmers?

You are thieves.
Are you thieves?

Teachers are in the hospital.
Are teachers in the hospital?

I was in London.
Was I London?

He was a policeman.
Was he a policeman?

She was my friend.
Was she my friend?

It was there.
Was it there?

The Teacher was in her office.
Was the teacher in her office?

We were at home.
Were we at home?

You were my class teacher.
Were you my class teacher?

They were at the beach.
Were they at the beach?

Teachers were at their home.
Were teachers at their home?

I will be in Australia.
Will I be in Australia?

We will be there.
Will we be there?

You will be as a my friend.
Will you be as my friend?

They will be in prison.
Will they be in prison?

Examples are in the Negative sentence

To convert a sentence into a negative sentence we have to add the word “NOT’ with the helping verb in the sentence.

I am a teacher.
I am not a teacher.

He is a student.
He is not a teacher.

She is a lawyer.
She is not a lawyer.

It is a bird.
It is not a bird.

The teacher is in the classroom.
The teacher is not in the classroom.

We are doctors.
We are not doctors.

They are Farmers.
They are not farmers.

You are thieves.
You are not thieves.

Teachers are in the hospital.
Teachers are not in the hospital.

I was in London.
I was not in London.

He was a policeman.
He was not a policeman.

She was my friend.
She was not my friend.

It was there.
It was not there.

The teacher was in her office.
The teacher was not in her office.

Examples are in the Interrogative or Question Of negative sentences

As we have already learned, to turn a sentence into an interrogative, we have to write the helping verb before the subject.

I am not a teacher.
Am I not a teacher?

He is not a student.
Is he not a teacher?

She is not a lawyer.
Is she not a lawyer?

It is not a bird.
Is it not a bird?

The teacher is not in the classroom.
Is the teacher not in the classroom?

We are not doctors.
Are we not doctors?

They are not Farmers.
Are they not farmers?

You are not thieves.
Are you not thieves?

Teachers are not in the hospital.
Are teachers not in the hospital.

When it comes like this, it should be changed like this.

It won’t be on a tree.
Won’t it be on a tree?
